Emergency Shelter Worker

We have an opening for an Emergency Shelter Worker on a full-time temporary basis to cover a maternity leave. The schedule is 4-on/4-off day shift from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

The purpose of this position is to help support clients’ gain independent living through support of life skills and referrals to other community agencies. Personnel are required to oversee the intake and care of clients in the housing program. Participates as part of the team responsible for the efficient functioning of operations by assisting clients improve their ability to perform activities of daily living. They are also responsible to ensure the wellbeing and safety of all clients.

What you’ll do

  • Be available to clients for practical and moral support.
  • Carry out inspection / security checks of property and grounds in accordance with policies and procedures.
  • Notify Program Coordinator of any major problems or emergencies. Respond to emergencies in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Supports clients with their routines throughout the shift.
  • Performs housekeeping duties such as dusting, sweeping, mopping, emptying garbage, sterilizing washrooms, cleaning, and laundry.
  • Accurately record shift happenings using the appropriate methods; intake forms, maintain communication logs and complete all forms required.

What you bring

  • Related Certificate or Diploma; or minimum Grade 12 education, plus two (2) years of recent related experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Familiarity with community resources; such as addiction, mental health, income assistance and harm reduction would be an asset.
  • Ability to work independently or in a team setting.
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills are essential.
  • You understand the importance of clientele/worker boundaries.
  • You have the ability to maintain a caring and calm presence in a diverse environment with adults who may be challenging to deal with.
  • Current First Aid certificate is required; Non-Violent Crisis Intervention training and Food Safe certificate would be assets.
  • Successful completion of Criminal Record check

This position is open to all applicants and union membership is required. The starting wage is $22.79 per hour.
